If you’re having trouble finding information, these quick tips should help get you back on track.

If you get too few sources...

Think of synonyms.

You tried: child

Try: juvenile, young adult, pre-pubescent

Use truncation (? or *) for more word endings.

You tried: nurse

Try: nurs? or nurs*

(This will look for nurse, nursing, nurses, and other words that begin with NURS.)

Don't use terms that are too specific.

You tried: Kaposi’s sarcoma AND Kentucky

Try: AIDS AND Kentucky

Kaposi’s sarcoma AND United States

AIDS-related illness AND Kentucky

You get too many sources:

Use AND to separate terms.

You tried: diabetes juvenile Kentucky

Try: juvenile AND diabetes AND Kentucky

Use quotation marks to search words together.

You tried: juvenile diabetes

Try: "juvenile diabetes"

This will look for the words juvenile diabetes, as a phrase, instead of finding each word separately.

Don't use terms that are too broad.

You tried: obesity

Try: "childhood obesity" AND "risk factors"
