If you’re having trouble finding information, these quick tips should help get you back on track.

If you get too few sources...

Think of synonyms.

You tried: child

Try: juvenile, young adult, pre-pubescent

Use truncation (? or *) for more word endings.

You tried: dental

Try: dent? or dent*

(This will look for dental, dentist, dentistry, and other words that begin with DENT.)

Don't use terms that are too specific.

You tried: periodontal disease

Try: gum disease

periodontal OR gum disease

You get too many sources:

Use AND to separate terms.

You tried: plaque reduction floss toothbrush

Try: "plaque reduction" AND floss AND toothbrush

Use quotation marks to search words together.

You tried: juvenile dental caries

Try: "juvenile dental caries"

This will look for the words juvenile diabetes, as a phrase, instead of finding each word separately.

Don't use terms that are too broad.

You tried: plaque

Try: "plaque reduction" OR "plaque treatment"
